How Spaces and UTF-8 Bytes Are Counted
With and without spaces
The count with spaces includes spaces, line breaks, and tabs. The count without spaces removes all whitespace and counts only the remaining characters.
Words and sentences
Word count uses the browser's language-aware word segmentation when available. Sentence count is based on punctuation such as periods, question marks, and exclamation marks, so results can vary with writing style.
UTF-8 bytes
Byte count uses UTF-8 encoding. English letters usually use one byte and Korean characters use three, so the visible character count may differ from the byte count.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between character counts with and without spaces?
The count with spaces includes spaces, line breaks, and tabs. The count without spaces removes those whitespace characters.
Are Korean characters counted accurately as one character?
Yes. The tool uses browser text segmentation to count composed Korean characters and common emoji as one visible character. Older unsupported browsers fall back to Unicode code points.
What is the UTF-8 byte count?
It is the data size needed to save or transmit text in UTF-8. English letters and numbers generally use one byte, Korean characters use three bytes, and emoji may use more.
Is my text stored on a server?
No. Counting runs only in your browser. The entered text is never sent to or stored on Congdy Coding's servers.
Can I count characters on a mobile device?
Yes. Yes. Paste or type text on a phone or tablet and every count updates in real time.
